Problem Statement
Why this issue?
SDG's :
I choose to focus on this topic as it affects almost everyone and is especially present in our world. First of all due to the increase of mental health related issues due to social media, increased screen and alone time, and high pressures and fears from the world. The other reason is the unproportional impact of mental health issues on youth, and being at a school surrounded by youth in high pressure I see the effects all the time.
The main SDG i’m focused on is sdg 3, good health and well being. I also touch on number 4, and 9 which cover education and infrastructure. While SDG 3 primarily covers physical health, mental health is just as important and often tied to physical well being. Good mental health is also the backbone to all others as an unhealthy society cannot function and achieve all other goals to better itself.
The mental health crisis is one of the largest global issues, with over one billion individuals being affected by mental health conditions. Mental health comes in many forms, from depression and anxiety, to psychological conditions such as schizophrenia and even alcohol and drug abuse are defined as mental health conditions. Mental health is a complex field, and many people lack or have incomplete understandings of what it is and how they can help themselves and others. There are two main reasons preventing people from accessing proper care, lack of access and high costs. By talking about mental health more, and creating greater understanding and awareness with it more people may be open to looking for care. Breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health and mental health workers can help as well, but it’s important to remember people’s culture and background. Mental health shouldn’t be treated as something to be ashamed about or as an illness, mental health should be treated like any other health and talked about and cared for on a regular basis. This will allow for greater understanding and better care for all.
