Mental Health epidemic
The mental health epidemic is one of the largest issues in the world right now with over one billion people experiencing mental health issues. Furthermore the issue is only increasing with over 10% increases in anxiety and depression in the last ten years. The issue is predicted to only increase more, a study revealed that about half of the world population will suffer with a mental health issue at one point of their life. Higher stress due to social media, isolation, competition and comparison and the current world state has only increased the issue. There are many causes for mental health issues: trauma, inequality, systemic and social pressures, genetics, social media and technology, and much more. Mental health concerns don't always mean there is an underlying issue or illness but it is important to recognize and assess any symptoms to prevent further damage.
Lack of awarness and care
The lack of care also has its causes whether that be fear, ideas, lack of knowledge or the increasingly high price of receiving care. As of 2026 the average cost for a therapy session is between 100-200 dollars, the average person is paying 1080 dollars a year for mental health care. Spending has increased by 253 percent from 2000 with 140 billion spent in 2022. But outside of high costs there are other roadblocks that come in between those suffering and the care they need. Based on research by the national library of medicine, factors that youth report range from individual, systems, social and relationship based fears or barriers. 96% reported barriers related to individual factors such as lack of knowledge and not knowing how to seek out or where to find help. Another issue is failing to see mental health conditions as needing of care or professional support. Many youth are also doubtful of the effectiveness of the current mental health care system, causing them to avoid it. 92% reported social factors and how their peers will react and perceive mental health. Perceived stigma was the main social factor, as well as disappointing family and friends. 68% report relationship factors as a barrier. This is specifically relationships with mental health care and mental health care professionals, expressing concern over sharing with a stranger or professional. Youth are more likely to seek help if youth felt respected, listened to and not judged. 58% reported systemic and structural factors preventing care. This includes logistical factors like lack of time and resources, as well as financial factors due to the often high cost of mental health care that was mentioned before.
Impacts and effects
Mental health is currently the leading cause of disability, when going untreated it can lead to severe emotional behavior and physical health problems and potential major harm or death. The main complications related to mental health issues are wide ranging, which can impact all parts of life in many ways. Poor communication, worsened work ethic and performance, and lesser motivation are all major effects from poor mental health or mental health issues, along with more serious damage to physical health. Suicide is the second highest leading cause of death for those aged 10-24, more common than Cancer, heart conditions, and infections combined. Even if one doesn’t attempt suicide or self harm mental heath still negatively effects their physical states and life expectancy. Those who suffer from severe mental health issues tend to live 10-20 years less than average. Mental health can impact all parts of life even if undiagnosed or after care, it's important to keep yourself and those around you checked, as good mental health is tied to good physical health.
