Dr Keith Robert Head
Dr Keith Robert Head is a social worker and researcher who focuses on AI’s impact on mental health, scientific findings and their institutions, and diagnostic frameworks in regard to culture. We talked about two major factors in modern mental health care, AI and culture. On AI Dr Head discussed the damage that AI can cause and it potentially biases and limitations. Ai is only as strong as the data it is trained on and isn't able to understand experience, emotions or come to independent conclusions. Ai also doesn’t follow the legal rule of a therapist which can lead to self harm, abuse, and even suicide. He also told me that Ai had bias and shared a study that multiple LLMs suggested worse treatment or gave less care to African Americans as compared to caucasians. Despite this he did share some positives on Ai saying that it could be used as a support in therapy to assist with administrative tasks and background work. He said it could also be effective as. First stop or some small to moderate depression or similar mental health challenges. On culture he talked about language barriers and understanding cultural norms when working to help with mental health as its key to create connections and understanding with patients.
